Islam needed this type of experience to grow as a fighter and develop his own Fight IQ. First title defence, Khabib not in his corner, away crowd and fighting arguably the best fighter in the world is a lot of pressure and he held up very well. One of the best fights ever! Here's my analysis: R1 and 4: Islam. R3 and 5: Volk. R2 was very close, but overall I think Islam won with a close margin. Hats off to Volk for such an amazing wrestling defense. Finally someone showed they had the answer for the dagistani wrestling. And his mentality, body language and mind games throughout the fight were superior too. But people are not talking about Islam's striking. He dominated the standup most of the times with some amazing shots, which should ideally be Volk's area of expertize. Amazing fight and love to see them fight some time in future. P.S. Electric Aussie crowd made it even better. Although they could've been a little easier on Islam with those Boos after the win :)

After rewatching the fight it’s clear islam won 1,2,4 Round 3 was super close But Volk won round 5 and ended the last minute dominantly I think the reason why people think volk won because they expected Islam to dominate and Volk to get dominated Yet in reality it was a close fight with Islam winning overall

Two amazing fighters giving us an absolute show of skill and talent. They are truly worthy of the title P4P. This fight takes nothing away from either fighter and just shows what a true fight between worthy adversaries looks like. From their complete respect for each other to their display of skill, this was one of the best fights to date. I hope they fight again in the future and bring us another magnificent fight.

That's what separates Alex from others. As Islam himself said, he started wrestling and BJj since he was a small boy, with Khabib and the latter's father. Alex was a short 5'6" who simply put on a lot of muscles, so he could play rugby against 6'3" 230lb guys! And he didn't switch to MMA until he's 23 or so! And despite Islam's next level wrestling, judo, and BJJ and 5 inches taller and 15 pounds heavier, he couldn't do a thing against Alex, in the wrestling or in BJJ submissions! I also have to admire Islam, too, though: he's known mostly for his wrestling and BJJ; but he showed tonight, that even when those two major tools his his failed, he could still stand there and do 90% toe to toe against the best stand-up guy at the UFC on a pound for pound basis, for 5 rounds!

something that i think needs to be noted is that Islam was very depleted in this fight, not only did he have a bad cut, but he also had 9 hours less to recover/refuel from the weight cut (due to the australia commision changing the weigh ins to be 9 hours later but keeping the fights at the same time). not trying to make excuses for Islam, but that needs to be taken into account, because he looked so drained in this fight, that wasnt islam at his best. had islam been more energized, he would've beat volk more decisively imo, and thats coming from somebody who was rooting for volk (i think islam is boring) the fact that the australia commission think they can change weigh in timings like that (to have Islam 9 hours less to rehydrate, forcing makhachev to be depleted) should be illegal, Australia has a terrible commision. the weigh ins are meant to happen 33 hours before an event, not 24 lmao
