Max Holloway is my personal favorite fighter ever, he inspired me to start kickboxing, but I have to say that Volk was by far the better fighter in every aspect in this fight. His IQ and technique is beyond impressive.

When I first saw that fight, I was just confused at how Volk outplayed Max everywhere, now looking back it is so much more impressive. Alex has such great technique, fight IQ, power, speed and FEINTS. He is definitely one of the most skillful fighters in the history of the UFC. Him and Petr Yan are almost like in the league of their own

Look up a breakdown from TheWeasle on that fight, he goes over every single strike and move in those close rounds and proves that Volk won a close fight clean as a whistle.

I have no idea how two of those judges scored it 48-47. Watched it a few times, and everytime I have it 50-45 like that last judge. There is some argument for 49-46 but thats as good as you can reasonably give it for Max.
Incompetent and/or biased judging may explain why. Historically judges have been known to favour fighters whom the UFC wants to win, and gift them rounds they did not win. This was one such example.
How does scoring work?
@@artofstorytelling9406 good question. It's a bit of a long answer, but hopefully me explanation below will help make things clearer. Different MMA promotions have different methods of scoring. Japanese promotions tend to focus on scoring the fight as a whole. A lot of people prefer this system, but unfortunately it is extremely susceptible to being fixed. The UFC instead works under the "10-must" system which was adopted from boxing and altered to fit Mixed Martial Arts. This system basically works as follows: the winner of a round is awarded 10 points, and the loser is awarded either 8 or 9 points. The loser gets 9 points if they lost the round but were somewhat competitive, whilst the 8 score is when they were getting dominated. 8s used to be extremely rare, and only handed out when the losing fighter barely made it through the round, but changes to scoring in the last few years have made them more common. After the fight is over, the scores from all the rounds are tallied together. Some examples below. Fighter A and Fighter B are set to fight in a 3 round bout. Fighter A gets the better of fighter B in rounds 1 and 2, but they're competitive rounds. Both rounds are scored 10-9 in favour of fighter A by all judges. The score is now 20-18 going into round 3. In round 3, fighter B drops fighter A twice, mounts him in the last minute and is hitting him with brutal ground and pound. Surprisingly the ref is not stopping the fight. The final bell rings. All judges score the final round 10-8 in favour of fighter B. This brings the total score to 28-28. The fight is declared a draw. So that's how scoring is counted. But what gets you those points to begin with? The primary scoring criteria is "effective striking and grappling". The wide variety of complex positions and techniques means that MMA judges have to be far more subjective than those in boxing for instance. Often this can mean weighing one fighter's effective grappling against another's striking. Striking obviously causes damage, and one fighter than out-strikes another by a significant margin will typically win. But being in a controlling position for long periods in grappling sequences, or getting close to finishing someone with submissions also counts. I tend to think of this as "who got closer to finishing the fight" although that's not always appropriate. On the rare occasions when these criteria are equal, judges will take into account "Effective Aggressiveness" and "Octagon control". Effective is the key word in the aggressiveness part. Running after your opponent without doing much will not win you that round. But where fights are equal, the perceived aggressor will get the nod. Many fans find this criteria to be controversial. Some argue its actually in the rules to make fights more exciting, encouraging fighters to take risks to appear good in the eyes of the judges. Octagon control is basically how much territory you have. If most of the round your opponent has been backed up to the fence, they are seen as "ceding ground" and as such lose the round. Of course some fighting styles are disadvantaged by this, but keep in mind that those criteria are ONLY to be used if effective striking and grappling are equal. Sorry for the wall of text, I made it as concise as I could.

Nothing wrong with that scorecard at all. At worst Volk won 49-46, but regardless this was an overall shutout performance by Volkanovski. You should be more mad at the two stooges who scored this 48-47.

the thing that makes me think Alex is better than Max as a fighter is not just because he beat him twice but because Max is Overpowered, he has an insane Chin and toughness and doesn't even get dropped when a hard hitter Lightweight hits him back to back but Alex doesn't have that unbreakable Chin and Size that Max has but he still gets ahead of Max through Sheer Skill-Set and Will.
