    • I love this fight! This is when people thought no rules fighting would be a complete blood fest and fists flying. But it turned out Brazilian jiu jitsu was so superior it would cancel out every other martial art. So many of the UFC rules today is to cancel out the superiority of the Gracie family technique so there are more knockouts. Even today so many world champions come from the wrestling world, they have to hold them back so the audience get their fist fights. If they didn't, graplers would rule most of the weight classes. Just as Connor about the one man who took his belt and he still does not want to try to win it back :)

    • Thats because the Gracies ran the show and made the rules. this fight shoulda been stood up so many times. and the 1 time it was Shhamrock rocked him. after the gracie family made up the ring side rule of OT. thinking it would benefit Royce. Luckily big John was smart enough to stand it up. which im sure the Gracies hated. the fact there was a time limit and no judges is ridiculous. Shamrock won the fight. Gracies are frauds. just like they told Shamrock in the 1st fight he couldn't wear his boots because the were weapons. yet Gracie and his Gi he uses to choke ppl is ok. Thank God Matt Hughes put Gracie in his place.

If this fight happened today, they would have been stood up after the first 3 minutes of the fight, Gracie without the gi wouldn't be able to hold on nearly as long as he did and this fight probably never even happens because Gracie is fighting above his weight class in this fight.

  • A lot of people may not understand why this fight was such a big deal. It's not just the names, the "#1 vs. #2 title-fight" marketing, or the cool gi and wrestling spandex/shoes. Royce was considered the best submission grappler in the world at the time, nobody could out grapple him. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stood out as a monolith no style could beat. Average fan pre-fight: "Shamrock can't beat Royce on the ground. The second he goes into Royce's guard it's over." Same fan watching fight: "HOLY SHIT, Ken's surviving Royce's guard! Royce can't do anything! This is so surreal!" Ken wasn't able to win the fight, but he basically gave the entire world the blueprint on how to defeat high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with wrestling, and that was a Significant leap that the reverberations of are still being felt today, and it led to the rise of Sakuraba. This fight really opened a lot of people's eyes up. It's awful lay 'n pray otherwise.

      @pivgfm@pivgfm4 жыл бұрын
    • @@HarpoTheVillain (This is an very lengthy reply, so apologies in advance) Gracie had defeated every opponent he had faced, including Shamrock at UFC 1. Gracie was submitting people off his back from within his guard, every which way, that it was seen as a guaranteed victory for Gracie, the moment Shamrock ended up in Gracie's guard, plus Gracie had beaten Shamrock relatively quickly at UFC 1. Fast foward to UFC 5, Shamrock ended up in Gracie's guard from the beginning, a guaranteed victory for Gracie at the time, when people realized Shamrock has been in Gracie's guard longer than anyone previously and hadn't tapped out yet, they knew maybe Gracie could be beaten , once Shamrock landed the punch in the stand up, the mystique of Gracie and GJJ, had been somewhat diminished. Before UFC 5- "No one can beat Royce... Gracie Jiu Jitsu is unbeatable...Gracie beat Shamrock already..." During UFC 5-(Shamrock takes Royce down and ends up in Gracie's Guard) (Fans)-"Uh-oh, Ken is in Gracie's Guard, it's all over now..." (15 mins in) (Fan's)-"Wait, Gracie hasn't submitted Shamrock yet..." "Shamrock's still in this fight" (20-25 mins in) (Fan's)-" Times running out, Shamrock needs to do something...Royce hasn't submitted Shamrock...Stand them up..." (31 mins and 6 seconds in, Fight restarted from the standing position-(Fight was scheduled for 30 mins, the promoters, Art Davie and Bob Meyrowitz, had so much money invested they wanted to give the fighters a chance and give the fans a clear winner) (Gracie)- " He's still standing and I don't have enough time ..." (Shamrock)-" Alright Royce, I've been in your guard, in your world, you've tried all your gi chokes, armbars, triangle chokes, sweeps and I'm still here" Royce throws a kick, in an attempt to bait Shamrock setting up a takedown, Shamrock counters with a straight right hand and hits Gracie flush on the eye, Gracie desperately reaches out in an attempt to clinch with Shamrock, Shamrock obliges, by securing an an over-under and turns Gracie to the canvas, Shamrock headbutts Gracie and proceeds to throw punches to Gracie's face, Gracie goes from any sort of offense to full defense. (Fans-) "Shamrock hit Gracie..." "Gracie's in trouble..." " Royce can still submit him..." " Ken's still going..." Overtime expires- Shamrock looks fresh and like he can go another 30 mins or longer. Gracie looks completely gassed, his gi is covered in his own blood, his nose is bloodied, right eye is busted open and nearly swollen shut, left eye is blackened as well and he is literally carried out of the arena by his brothers. Shamrock, looks over at Helio Gracie, whom was protesting for..." three more minutes", holds up 3 fingers, "you want three more minutes?" No clear cut winner and no judge's at this time, officially declared a draw. Fans reactions a justifiably mixed. Shamrock used a lot of dirty wrestling techniques within the guard(grinding the knuckles into Royce's sternum,headbutts, dropping an occasional elbow into Gracie's ribs, abdominal region) effectively neutralized Gracie's submission attempts from within the guard and proved that Gracie Jiu Jitsu wasn't the only effective submission grappling style and was far from unbeatable. Shamrock also proved that Royce wasn't in better condition than he was. Gracie demonstrated just how offensive he can be off his back( dozens of heel kicks to the lowerback of Shamrock, slaps and punches the back of Shamrock's head and neck, eziekel choke attempt) My own opinion is that at this stage in Shamrock's career, and how tired Gracie looked and his physical appearance afterwards, that had they continued for another 10-15 mins, Gracie would've have been so gassed, that Shamrock would've continued the onslaught on Gracie's face and would've sunk in a submission, but I don't believe Royce would've tapped. I think Referee John McCarthy, would've needed to intervene and stop the fight. UFC 6 Shamrock defeats Severn to become the first Superfight(openweight)Champion. Royce effectively retired after his fight with Shamrock and didn't compete for nearly three years until his return to BJJ competition and was choked unconscious by Wallid Ismail. Gracie Fans-Shamrock hid behind the safety of a time limit, and Gracie was moments away from submitting Shamrock. Shamrock Fans- Gracie was bloody mess and had to be carried out the octagon....Gracie hasn't fought in the UFC since( keep in mind this was looong before Zuffa) Unless you have grappled before, you really can't have an appreciation for this fight.

    • @@jturk0131 Gracie showing that BJJ is the most effective martial art in an actual fight ruined the sport? How did that ruin the sport exactly? You realize Gracie was there at the very beginning, on the actual night the sport really started? So there was no sport to ruin, it didn't exist before him.

    • @@neallyons9515 If BJJ is the most effective martial art in an actual fight, why are the vast majority of mma champions trained in other disciplines as well? Clearly it's one of the most important skills, but you can't say that it is, by itself, the most effective. Anyone who is trained only in BJJ is usually not going to win against someone trained in BJJ who also has striking skills.

  • In Pancrase you had a time limit when you went to the mat. If no one made progress, the ref would stand you back up and restart the fight. I guess UFC didn't adopt that bc it would've given strikers a huge advantage over the Gracies whereas in Pancrase there was usually more balance between opponents
