Idc what anyone says, this man is one of the greatest and maybe the best fighter this sport has ever seen. Going up a weight class and performing like that? Against an elite, physically imposing grappler like Islam? A generational talent
That's what I think a lot of people really aren't grassping. He didn't just go up a division, he went up and then took on the number 1 fighter in the comp. Volk would destroy every other fighter currently competing at lightweight.
Alex is one of the goats for sure. Fought like a bigger man in there. Both great champs.

Volk is a breath of fresh air in these times. Old school, hard nosed, hard worker who gives it everything he's got with integrity. He's still a champion and still one of the top pound for pound.
The fuck you talking about? How does losing to a bigger guy drop him lower from pound for pound? It should show he deserves it more for fighting higher guys. Truth is Volkanovski won the fuckin fight. Another truth is that Makhachev's body can't handle any more weight cuts and he was not his usual self last night.

I was filled with so much adrenaline watching Volk during this fight. I went into it wanting him to win but expecting him to get submitted quickly. He proved me wrong in the best way, truly one of the greatest this sport has ever seen. Legend.

Volk proved what a PFP #1 fighter is. Went up a division, having his #1 status and undefeated streak on the line and put up a great fight. Would love a rematch
His belt wasn't on the line though. Much like when Izzy went up, Alex had very little to lose, and that's a good way to go into any contest.

I totally underestimated him, considering we were talking about Khabib clone lol. I thought he’d go out early in the second round or just get tossed the whole fight like usual, boy did the incredible vulk prove me wrong. I’m now a fan and can’t wait for the rematch.

@truthissimple3960 except according to the rules, damage trumps all. That includes being on the back and mounting zero effective offense and absorbing 40 plus strikes. Horrid scoring and a general lack of understanding of the unified rules of MMA...

The fact that we got to see the #1 and #2 top fighters in the world put on an absolute masterclass in front of some amazing fans is incredible!
Islam is nowhere near the top fighter in the world. Volk has been up there the past 2 years, Jon Jones forever up there. Even Usman and Edwards are above Islam.

Volk can hang in the LW division with the best. I don’t think Poirier, Oliveira or Gaethje beat this man. He’s an animal and his cardio is unquestionably the best in the UFC. How the hell did he have that much energy after 5 rounds with a monster like Islam? Inspiring, even with the loss. And Despite him being my favorite fighter, I do believe the 48-47 scorecards were a fair decision.
Islam isn't a striker. Dustin and Justin would definitely give volk a run. Both have good ground game and use it to stay on the feet. Volk is a great striker too so it'd be a slugfest

A fight like this it's almost impossible to not become big fans of both of these guys, especially Volk for being the smaller guy and pushing the larger guy to the absolute brink. Volk is such a savage and humble fighter, he even reveals spots where Islam should make adjustments in his striking. Never heard a fighter say something like about an opponent he just faced and very well may fight again in a rematch down the line. Incredible.

I just didn’t think Volk would get dominated like people said. The man is a warrior. Seeing him getting up after being taken down, reversing positions, and defending submission attempts was so damn thrilling - That rematch needs to happen, and will be so much more explosive with the improvements they’ll make! @@laposyakin Unlike Chad though, Islam was much bigger than Volk, so people thought he would get dominated by Islam's ground game. I was rooting for Volk and was nervous as to what would happen when it got to the ground, but he showed why he is one of the best fighters around today.

As being a Dagestani fan boy, today I finally saw that they are human after all. Inn happy Islam won, however, volk won my heart. Personally this should have been a draw. Islam beat volk in his striking and volk best Islam in grappling. No one has ever gotten out of Islams hold the way volk did. Watching the fight I almost had a heart attack. This was war!
