How is Charles vs. Dustin not up there as well? Trust me, climbing on someone's back and choking them out is not an easy thing to do, that one definitely takes my vote.
I’m guessing it will count toward next year or something. That one and Julianna’s sub. But CO should def be on this list if it’s not saved for next year.

Totally agree...
I feel like Luque’s darce against Chiesa was a better sub. Going against a guy with better submission ability than Woodley, and the way he escaped the position to locking up his choke was really impressive.
Right?
lol... darce against Chiesa was beautiful...

I disagree. Tyron was basically kod and didn’t try to fight out of it at all. Also he was well on his way out. All of these subs except for Khamzats seemed to be already finished fighters finding a way out.

Moreno taking the title against Figuieredo with that choke was so epic and momentous, and same with Pena vs Nunes. Id pick one of those, though the Chimaev choke on Jingliang was quite notable, too.

Andre Muniz vs Jacare Souza, the way he switched to an arm in the middle of losing the back plus it was against Jacare, Plus Luque's D'arce on Chiesa was better than his one on Woodley, snatched it up out of nowhere and gator rolled him over. Plus Leavitt just got an inverted triangle and Sabatini got a heel hook on Emmers after being badly dropped just before. Also Paul Craig's should count even though it wasn't considered a submission. I've just seen so many RNC's before and most of them where on gassed out opponents.
This is what I’m saying guru, they just basing it of popularity, the sport sucks. Imagine watching back the subs of the year and seeing khamzat get an average RNC against leech 🤣
Fook de members
Guru never misses. These awards are as valuable as the Oscar’s and Grammys. All bullshit
Ikr is this video suppose to be most high profile submissions of the year or submissions of the year? because all of these chokes are standard RNC on opponents and most of them are gassed out
For realllllllllllll all of these were just the best stories of the year. Paul Craig’s is my favourite this year
No Paul Craig? I guess the submission didn’t result in a tap but snapped Hill’s arm in half with a highly technical display of BJJ.
Watching that live was crazy
Agreed that was by far the slickest submission attempt. Islams sub on hooker was the best actual sub this year imo
Woodley has probably had the worst high profile year for any fighter ever. I personally think Woodley's 2021 was worse than Askren's 2019.
weirdly they are also friends
Most def, getting kod off Jake Paul sealed it
He also made one of the highest pay this year somehow lol
Worst or best? He made more money this year than his entire career. Considering he's a prize fighter... That's pretty good
don't forget Askren also got kod by jp this year
“Fluffy” Hernandez's choke against Vieira was pretty epic to me considering the level of BJJ and accolades he had. Hell Guidas choke against Santos is up there too 💪💯
Hernandez by sub was 25/1 at the bookies It was an even bigger upset than pena by sub in regards to betting odds strictly.

I most likely will get a lot of weird eyes on me saying this but imo Sub of the year should be something we dont see often. I get that Moreno's RNC over Figgy was a huge moment and it was a big deal given it was the crowning moment of a new and Mexico's first ever champ but a Rear Naked choke is probably the most used submission in the world. The one I would pick is something like Gamrot's kimura over Stephens, because whilst Kimura is also a sub that used often, the fashion in which Gamrot did it in was fantastic. Used the kimura as a counter against Stephens' own kimura and basically tapped out Stephens' within a minute of the fight.
Only casuals will give you weird eyes
Maybe Islam's arm triangle against drew dober
@@zeeshanzaman6454 oh true that one was really nice given that he did it from half guard and not from side control like other arm-triangles
i agree but moreno pena and glover will all probably get more votes due to the circumstances of being being underdogs against dominant champs

The submissions on this list shouldn’t even be top 20 it’s crazy 😭
I really don't understand on what criteria was this list made...
Whatever happens to sub of the year having to do with style, a few of these are just normal RNC’s shouldn’t be on the list just because of the story/rest of the fight
Yea, the submission of the year being a RNC would be silly.
@@nomic5921 although that one RNC agapova got on Sabina mazo, a lot better than any of the RNC’s featured on this video
Why? Why is an RNC a lesser submission then any other submission? Also the context of how a submission is achieved and what it means for a division or a career is 100% of what makes it a submission of the year
@@az8039 it’s the most common submission, sub of the year used to be flying armbar’s. Sub of the year should be Julian Erosa vs Charles Jordain. Also they only added popular fighters. As I said agapova got was so much slicker than moreno or khamzat. But it doesn’t matter because agapova and Erosa aren’t popular
@@seanmmaii7018 Exactly, the whole *blank* of the year is a popularity contest. How tf is Khamzat's RNC worthy at all of being a nominee??!
The Julian Erosa D'arce on Charles Jourdain was quick and very technical. That choke or the Luque on Chiesa D'arce should def be on this list!
they made a top 5 of the best ''sub moments'' instead of subs, im pissed about it too cuz youre right
Glover, slick to mount and a choke for the Championship belt. At 42 years old
It wasn't a choke. It was a jaw crank, which could've broken Jan's neck.
These are mostly decently cool submissions with significantly cooler circumstances and storylines behind them. Obviously the title changes were big moments, Khamzat's flawless victory was one of the year's standout performances, etc., but there were dozens of cooler/more technically impressive subs that ought to have been spotlighted here.
You’re right, but the “big moments” get more views
@@michaelperry9180 If uploaded individually, then the big moments will for sure get far more clicks than someone undercard dude pulling off a subtle technique. But in this case, people clicking the video won't really know which clips are in it, so the actual content of a "2021 submission of the year nominees" video seems unlikely to affect the number of clicks.
Khamzat transition was Remarkable, other guys made opponent tired and Choked. Khamzat choked a fresh guy within minutes.... Awesome
Yeah it was pretty epic how he was like, this is my step up in competition? Let me show u what I do to this guy too. He didn't just devour his prey. He played with his food 1st. Scoops him & effortlessly carries him over to Dana like, "Here, for u, a gift." ... Like a cat bringing his dead prey home to his human as an offering. It’s got to be Luque. The other ones have more significance but Luque has the most impressive submission
Lol no that submission was hot garbage on a Woodley who was already near death. Khamzat < everyone you know

Its determined by the technique but they’ll probably give to Khamzat because he is the new cash cow…
Brandon should win he submitted the champion when he was unbeatable.
I wrote this on another comment, what is wrong with an RNC? Why is any other submission greater or lesser then any other one. I would argue an RNC is arguably the best submission in the game becuase you need complete positional dominance to get it. Makes sense there are several on here
@@az8039 well if we're talking submission of the year then that seems to mean the most impressive submission we've seen this year. To a lot of people, showcase of skill is what they find impressive. Or at least something crazy. Like if we're calling it the best submission of this year it's gotta be memorable. So many fighters had RNC's this year, and most of them look the exact same position-wise and they're not on this list simply because the fighters on here have bigger names. To me, Islam's submission against Hooker was the most skillful and impressive.
Just shut up and Vote for Moreno's RNC
I’m not overly wowed by any of these submissions. I think for me it’s between Moreno since it was a great moment this year and Chimaev because he was so dominant in his performance and the switch that he did was so intelligent.
Great take
I love these vids, but I'm hoping that eventually there could be more context inserted into why they are such great submissions as it not only increases entertainment value but doubles as promotions to the fighters. Moreno's story and the fight was amazing and simply seeing an RNC without context makes casual viewers less likely to understand just how big that win was for him for example. Flashback to him saying he was gonna be champ one day to the win against Figgy is an amazing story.
Brandon Moreno, But Islam should be in this list, he made 3 submision in less than 10 months.
Not to mention how the Dan Hooker submission was a piece of art.
@@AsifIqbalR I'm baffled how that gets overlooked. Islam didn't even get a Performance Bonus for that, yet nobody has done that to Dan Hooker. Islam made that submission look way too easy.
His von flue choke "triangle choke" against Drew Dober was brilliant.
The control Khamzat have while he gets a hold of Leach is super dominant, even when he switch holds of the RNC superior control on the ground.
Where are the rare & creative submissions? I know she just lost, but Nune's inverted triangle armbar of Meagan Anderson was crazy. Not sure if that has ever been done in mma before (if it was, please tell me)
Tom Aspinall's swift and unexpected takedown and submission of Andre Arlovski back in February was memorable.
Yup. I remember putting him on a parlay as "Aspinall by KO/TKO" at first, then went back and changed it to Sub/KO/TKO because I had a gut feeling he was gonna do something crazy.
@@re_i_gn Good on ya mate. Aspinall was fluid throughout that fight seemingly ready to take what came his way. Not enough recognition was given to him, instead the commentators said Arlovski just gave up...not how I saw it. He rugby tackled him, slammed him against the post, drilled his left knee into his back, positioned him and subbed him before Arlovski knew what was happening. An excellent performance.
Watching Khamzat ragdoll his opponent while making casual conversation with Dana was hilarious!
"Outclassing" was the theme of 2021, in the grappling realm. There were so many fish-out-of-water moments. So many interesting match-ups that turned out badly for one party. What a year of fights! Happy New Year :-)
There’s no way Moreno doesn’t win this

Yes it was a fantastic win but Chimaev took 0 strike man He completely dominated and smash an actually good opponent… I also wonder how Oliveira’s choke against Poirier is missing there… That was as sneaky as a choke can get, fantastic submission…

@@excellentngwa3187 I think Magny proved that Li’s ground game was trash. Lmao Your statement makes it seem as though a win against Figuereido isn’t impressive. But I can assure you, getting a rear naked choke submission against a CHAMPION, who’s ground game is one of his best attributes, is far more impressive than beating someone who’s ground game is mediocre. Also, bringing up the fact Li’s ranked #11 definitely doesn’t make my statement any less true.
Glover. For that dude at 42 to choke out Jan for the strap is insane in itself.
Should've included Makhachev's kimura on Hooker
I'm voting for Glover - the subtle way he snuck his right arm under for the choke, by punching Jan's head up over it - wow, sweet timing & really sneaky.
Moreno should win this that moment was crazy! First time I’ve noticed that Jan was reaching to tap before Glover even locked the choke in. That pressure was too much and Glover earned that win.
Pressure on the neck for sure isn’t a joke! If he didn’t tap I bet Glover would have crushed his neck
Jan didnt look like himself that fight .. something was really really off
THis were epic subs but I think the could've included less prominent fighters in it that got crazier submissions. I mean most of them were RNCs

Jingliang has massive balls going to sleep instead of giving up, credits to him, Khamzat is another level i think he dominated and had the best finish
Balls? No, he's just irresponsible and weak. You measure someone's balls by how much they've trained their defensive grappling. Going to sleep just makes you look terrible in front of the world.
@@Lbcyoung I understand and respect your pov bro but i'm not measuring someone's balls by how much they've trained etc, i'm the kind of person that thinks that in this sport, sometimes going to sleep instead of quitting, brings you honor and makes you earn other fighters respect too, like Khabib(vs Mcgregor ) said in an interview "Thousands of people of your country came here to watch your fight, and you quit? How you can talk about being a warrior and then quit? Go sleep.." And about being irresponsible when you go to sleep, you're right, but don't forget they're professionals too and they know what they're doing plus that there is a referee and a lot of medics..have a great night🍻😉
@@9Alien8 quitting? You QUIT when you let your opponent catch you in a submission. Going to sleep will be even more embarassing than tapping, because it just makes you look helpless. It's a terrible highlight to be remembered for. Being finished is NO honor, no athlete will ever say that.

@@9Alien8 Looks like he was going to tap near the end but he was out first, when he brought his hand close under his chin. He might not trying to tap but we will never know and that did not make any difference. BTW, choosing to go to sleep really does not reflect having a bigger heart or anything in my opinion. It is also a sure way to get a suspension that will not allow you to compete again in several months. It's over all the same, but why risk being suspended on top of the lost also?
If we vote on how impressive and dominant the submission was, definitely Chimaev. Guy ran thru a 100HP opponent and choked him in R1! If we vote on the emotional value or "aww that made me cry" moment, which most will do, then it's Moreno or Glover. Personally Glover for me.
